‘Eye Spy’ by Tessa Buckley

My Review (4 stars out of 5)

Twins Alex and Donna set up their own investigation service to search for a missing dog. Several suspects soon catch the attention of the plucky pair, including a man in a fur hat, a biker gang, and bag lady Crazy Kath. But the twins find themselves involved in another mystery when their inventor father tries to market his latest creation. More significantly, Alex and Donna discover new information about their dead mother, which sends them on a hunt for the truth…

This is the first book in Tessa Buckley’s Eye Spy series (first of three) and centres on twins Donna and Alex. The siblings are a likable pair who live with their father and grandmother. The twins’ past is a little murky due to their mother dying many years earlier. However, the mystery deepens when their inventor dad is approached by people from a high-tech company interested in his latest invention – a clever robot. But Dad’s reaction to the offer is more than a touch odd, prompting his children to start digging into the past.

The book is a short read and only took me two days. The initial adventure (tracking down a missing dog) didn’t particularly grab me, but once the story took a more exciting turn, things got interesting. Aside from some punctuation issues, and way too many exclamation marks, this is an enjoyable and well-written tale with a thoughtful family-relationship angle that gave it more gravitas.

An enjoyable tale with an appealing mystery.

Author Bio

Tessa Buckley was an inveterate scribbler as a child, and spent much of her time writing and illustrating stories. After spending fifteen years working for architects and interior designers. She took up writing again when her young daughter complained that she couldn’t find enough adventure stories to read. This led, in 2014, to the publication of  Eye Spy, the first in a series of detective stories for 9-12 year olds, designed to encourage reluctant readers. The second book in the series, Haunted, was a finalist in the Wishing Shelf Book Awards 2017.  She lives with her husband and a large white cat called Pippa in a town on the Thames estuary, which inspired the seaside setting for the novels. She also writes about family history, which has been her passion for many years. Website.
