‘Polly the Polecat’ by KA Mulenga

My Review (3 stars out of 5)

Polly the polecat is an African skunk. If she’s ever frightened or in danger, Polly is able to release a horrible smell to scare away other animals, like lions and elephants.  The trouble is, she also has the habit of making horrible smells when she’s not scared.

On the face of it, this is a delightful picturebook story about self-control and knowing when to ask for help. However, the Kindle version of the book has a few issues – with several blank pages and the story text set against a similar-coloured background, it’s difficult to read on a Kindle with only black and white function.

I also think the author has misjudged his suggested age group – the reading/understanding abilities of 1-3, 4-6, 7-8 are very different. The story won’t appeal to an eight-year-old in the same way it might for as a three-year-old.
